Nolan Xavier Wells

A source-based public record of Nolan Wells's disappearance and death, the investigative timeline, forensic findings, digital evidence, grand-jury disposition, and the records that remain necessary to resolve the outstanding factual questions.

Last updated: October 1, 2026 · Confirmed facts, attributed expert findings, charging decisions, and unresolved questions are labeled separately.

Overview

Nolan Xavier Wells, 18, disappeared during a July 4, 2026 trip to Horn Island, Mississippi. His body was recovered on July 6. Both the state medical classification and an independent forensic review have been reported as Undetermined for cause and manner of death. A Jackson County grand jury later returned a unanimous No True Bill, meaning no criminal indictment was issued on the evidence presented.

Confirmed

No True Bill

The grand jury reviewed extensive evidence and did not return an indictment. That is the current criminal charging disposition.

Documented

Cause and manner remain undetermined

The available medical record does not establish a definitive mechanism of death.

Unresolved

Native records still matter

Phone artifacts, vessel GPS, Sea Tow metadata, pathology records, witness originals and recovery-scene records remain central to resolving the timeline.

Consonance assessment: the public record does not presently support identifying a specific homicide participant or asserting a cover-up. It also does not support treating the mechanism of Nolan's death as conclusively resolved. The purpose of this hub is to show exactly what the record establishes, what it does not establish, and what evidence could resolve the remaining conflicts.

Evidence Timeline

Objective clock anchors are kept separate from witness estimates and later interpretation.

July 4, ~2:17–2:18 PM
Last known phone use.
Garrett Discovery publicly presented this as Nolan's last use of the handset.
July 4, ~3:00 PM
Witness last-sighting estimate.
Consonance treats this as a witness-time estimate, not a verified vessel departure timestamp.
July 4, 4:31 PM
Sustained vessel movement.
The released MI4088BU GPS summary begins sustained northbound movement.
July 4, 4:36 / 4:48 PM
Sea Tow timing conflict.
A later forensic reconstruction reportedly includes a 4:36 event; a preserved phone record shows 4:48. Native metadata is needed to reconcile them.
July 6
Body recovered.
Nolan was recovered off Horn Island. The complete original recovery-scene file is not part of the public corpus reviewed by Consonance.
September 2026
Medical and grand-jury records become central.
Independent pathology findings, the state autopsy discussion and the redacted grand-jury report sharpened several unresolved issues.
September 21, 2026
No True Bill announced.
The Jackson County grand jury did not indict anyone on the evidence presented.
September 24, 2026
Phone-forensics disclosure.
Garrett Discovery publicly described last-use timing, device movement and disappearing Snapchat material, while the state autopsy details were also discussed.

Public Evidence Matrix

This is the simplified public layer. Consonance's working spreadsheet separately tracks source type, transmission/review status, contradictions, records needed and evidentiary limits.

IssueWhat the public record currently showsStatusQuestion to resolve
Last known phone useGarrett Discovery publicly placed Nolan's last known phone use around 2:17–2:18 PM on July 4.Attributed forensic disclosureWhere was Nolan after separation from the device?
Vessel movementThe released GPS summary begins sustained MI4088BU movement around 4:31 PM.Preserved public recordWho was aboard and what was the exact tow configuration?
Sea Tow timingPublicly relied-on records contain a 4:36 PM event and a 4:48 PM call.Unresolved source conflictWhich native record explains the 12-minute difference?
Alternate ride / 'chose to stay'The public file repeats this narrative but does not establish a complete authenticated listener chain or confirmed ride operator.UnresolvedWho offered the ride and what contemporaneous record proves the arrangement?
Phone movementThe phone returned toward the mainland while Nolan remained missing.Confirmed device/person distinctionWhen did the phone separate from Nolan, and who possessed it?
Snapchat deletions / unsendsSome Snapchat material reportedly disappeared after Nolan's last phone use; later clarification attributes some actions to senders unsending their own messages.Requires artifact-level attributionWhich messages disappeared, who initiated each action, and when?
Cause and mannerBoth state and independent medical determinations were reported as Undetermined.ConfirmedWhat mechanism best explains the death after complete pathology and scene review?
Posterior scalp injuriesBoth independent and publicly described state findings document posterior scalp contusions.Documented injury; mechanism unresolvedHow were the injuries sustained and did they contribute to death?
Grand juryA grand jury returned a unanimous No True Bill after extensive evidence review.Confirmed charging dispositionIs there genuinely new, material evidence outside what the grand jury considered?

Open Questions

1. Where was Nolan after his last known phone use around 2:17–2:18 PM?
2. When exactly did Nolan and his phone separate, and who possessed the phone afterward?
3. Who was aboard MI4088BU when sustained movement began around 4:31 PM?
4. What explains the publicly reported 4:36 Sea Tow event versus the preserved 4:48 call record?
5. What happened between the objective vessel-movement anchor and the distress/tow events?
6. Who originated the alternate-ride plan, who heard Nolan accept it, and what contemporaneous evidence confirms it?
7. What caused the documented posterior scalp and other injuries, and did they contribute to death?
8. What does the complete pathology, toxicology and recovery-scene record establish about the mechanism of death?
9. Which Snapchat artifacts disappeared, who initiated each deletion/unsend action, and when?
10. Is there new, authenticated, material evidence that was not available to the grand jury?

Priority Records

The shortest path to stronger conclusions is not speculation. It is obtaining and synchronizing the native records.

Priority 1

Forensic pathology file

Original-resolution photographs, histology, toxicology worksheets, specimen logs, radiology and examiner notes.

Priority 1

Native digital records

Phone extraction, provider returns, app databases, audit logs, examiner notes, native vessel GPS and Sea Tow telephony/dispatch metadata.

Priority 1

Recovery scene

Ranger narrative, discovery coordinates, body-position description, original scene photographs and body-movement chronology.

Priority 2

Witness originals

Recorded interviews, first-contact notes, contemporaneous statements and communications supporting the last-sighting and alternate-ride narratives.

Priority 2

Search and dispatch

911/CAD, Coast Guard file, aircraft/vessel mission tracks, drone and sonar logs, search sectors and SAR-model inputs.

Priority 2

Passenger accountability

Contemporaneous passenger rosters, vessel registrations, tow-assistance statements and evidence of any transfers between vessels.

Update Log

New forensic disclosures, official responses, source records and material corrections will be logged here rather than silently replacing the earlier public record.
